Thrashin’ 1986

Thrashin’ , the first in our skateboarding double feature, stars Josh Brolin as an unlikeable kid from the San Fernando valley who spends his summer in LA facing off against Tommy Hook and his “gang” the Daggers. Directed by David Winters, this movie also features pre-Twin Peaks Sherilyn Fenn as well as one other pre-Twin Peaks character! There’s also a live performance by a young Red Hot Chili Peppers, skateboard stunts by the likes of Tony Alva and Tony Hawk, and one great chase scene set to the music of the Circle Jerks. Unfortunately, all of these cool elements are offset by that painfully stupid skateboard jousting fight. Whatever, it’s free to watch on YouTube.

Friday the 13th 1980

Today we discuss Mrs. Voorhees’s parenting, Kevin Bacon’s shorts, and Ned’s disrespectful characterization of Native American traditions. It’s all part of our review of Sean Cunningham’s original Friday the 13th, the first in our sleepaway camp slasher double feature. Also: Who is the better parent? Mrs. Voorhees or Casey Anthony?

North Shore Trailer

Today we discuss the trailer to William Phelps’s 1987 North Shore, a movie about a competitive surfer from Arizona who heads to the north shore of Oahu to surf. Trouble no doubt ensues, not least because this movie stars no one you’ve probably heard of, except Laird Hamilton, who isn’t really an actor but a big wave surfer. Nia Peeples is cool, though, even if she isn’t related to Mario Van Peebles, who spells his last name differently, which may account for the lack of relation on their part. Anyway, today we discuss the trailer, and next week we review the full movie!

Listen now to hear the trailer and our thoughts, and of course, you can check out North Shore on Amazon and YouTube!

Black Panther: Tradition vs. Ideology

My wife recently forced me to visit an AMC theater so that I could have the pleasure of paying $19 a ticket to watch Black Panther in a theater filled with American theatergoers who use film only as a backdrop to loudly consume a Hefty-bag’s worth of popcorn slathered in fake butter and washed down with enough Coke-a-cola to drown a small village of pygmies.
